North Point Wet Market, Victoria Island, Hong Kong

The North Point Wet Market is one of the few wet markets in Hong Kong that have survived, out in the fresh air and under starry skies.  As the Ding-Ding, the local antediluvian street car system, lumbers past the shops and stalls, the grocers, butchers and fish mongers hawk their fresh wares, regularly hosing down their stalls and sidewalks, keeping both streets clean and their air free of odors (and perhaps the origin of the term “wet market”).

In some of these outdoor markets, one can find fresh sugar cane, which when bought will be promptly fed into a sugarcane crusher,a ferocious machine, yielding fresh, sweet sugar cane juice.
